Notice: General Reference Only

This information is provided for general reference only and is not an exact or complete step-by-step installation guide. Every vehicle, tank setup, and installation situation is different. Customers must research their specific application, adapt to their unique circumstances, and use common sense and sound judgment to complete the installation safely. How to check fit and install a Boyd Welding aluminum or stainless steel transfer tank.

Measure Before You Order

Fit depends on your truck, bed, and cover, so measure your own setup first.

  1. Check that the mounting footprint, not just the tank body, fits your bed space.
  2. Check that the overall height, including the fill cap, clears your bed cover, latches, or cover housing.
  3. Allow room for mounting materials, cover rails, supports, and in-bed hitch hardware.
  4. Allow room for the pump and its connections in the position you choose.
Clearance reminder: Sitting below the bed rails doesn't guarantee clearance under every bed cover.

Choosing a Pump Position

Pick the side you'll fuel from most often, and check the drawing for that position before you order.

Pump compatibility: Every pump notch fits only the GPI M150S 12-volt pump with an EZ-Spin collar.

Roll Top Covers

The 50 gallon roll top tank has an 8" × 11" step that clears the cover housing at the front of the bed. Check its 19" height against your cover's housing and latches, and use the published drawing to check your truck.

Known fit issues (not a complete list):

  • 2025 Ram 2500 with a Roll-N-Lock cover: the latch and tank cap interfere on height.
  • 2026 Ford F-250 with a Retrax cover: the cover fits, but the tank mounts interfere with the OEM in-bed hitch puck system.

Service Bodies

The 70 and 100 gallon service body tanks have recessed mounting with no external tabs, so nothing sticks out past the tank body. They fit between service body compartments with at least 48" of space. Measure the space between compartments and the clearance above the bed.

What You'll Need

Included with Every Tank

  • Installed GPI 12V 15 GPM pump
  • 12 ft hose and manual nozzle
  • 1/2" NPT rollover vent
  • Mechanical fuel gauge
  • PTFE thread-seal tape

Not Included

  • Mounting hardware and bolts
  • Vent hose and a small filter
  • Electrical connectors to wire the pump cord to your battery

Installation Steps

  1. Set the tank in place.
Position it so the footprint, height, and pump side match what you measured.
  2. Install drain plugs and seal fittings.
On tanks with drains, remove the blue shipping plugs and install the supplied drain plugs before adding any fuel.
Shipping plug warning: Blue plugs are for shipping only and must never be used with liquid.
Use the supplied PTFE tape on threaded fittings. Brass fittings are recommended.
  3. Mount it.
Bolt through the four mounting tabs, or the recessed mounts on service body tanks, using your own hardware.
  4. Connect the vent.
Run vent hose with a small filter from the 1/2" NPT rollover vent.
  5. Wire the pump.
Connect the pump cord to your battery with your own electrical connectors.
Protect the threads.
Aluminum and stainless steel threads can cross-thread and gall easily. Start plugs and fittings by hand, and never install them dry. Thread damage from dry-fitted plugs or hardware isn't covered under warranty.

Fuel and DOT

All tanks are for gasoline or diesel. Every tank is fully pressure tested at 5–8 psi and inspected following the 49 CFR 393.67 liquid fuel tank guidelines.

DOT notice: Our tanks aren't guaranteed to meet DOT requirements, and no special permit is provided.
